Travel Video of the Week - Things You No Longer Need Because of Smartphones

30 Things You No Longer Need Because of Smartphones

Our smartphones have replaced a lot of the travel gadgets and accessories we used to pack for a trip. These new devices have also enhanced some of the parts of travel beyond what was previously possible. I have mentioned the usefullness of smartphone while en route in a few previous posts: Smartwatches: A Revolution on Your Wrist?, Business Traveler Must-Have Travel Gadgets, and Best Gadgets for Watching Movies While Traveling. There is a lot you can do just with this small gadget in your pocket or bag. Video below shows 30 such items that we no longer need to take with us which means packing a lot less of the travel assist gear and more of the necessities. Which is so much better considering all of the luggage fees and transportation costs that exist now.

Sound-off: What are some other ways that you use your cellphone while traveling? Let us know below

Travel Tech Gadgets Goes Flying

Travel Tech Gadgets Goes Flying

This Sunday, it was gorgeous outside. Perfect day for a flight lesson.
For the first time ever I flew, actually piloted, the plane. I flew on planes before. It was an awesome experience. I got to take off, fly around, make a few right turns, that's right making a circle, and land. Of course, most of these were with assistance from the instructor, but you can't tell from the pictures and videos.
This experience was a gift from my wife for my birthday. She got to enjoy it with me as well. We flew the Cherokee Piper, a small plane that holds 4 people. We got to learn about the structure of the plane and what each part is used for. Also went over the gauges within the plane. There is one the shows the Attitude. What a great name. It gauges if the plane is in the correct position or is it too high, too low, or if one of the wings is banked.

These pictures were taken with our Canon PowerShot SX150 IS. This point-and-shoot takes great shots and has 10x digital zoom. Our favorite on the go camera.

An interesting thing happened on the way back from the airport. I was using my iPhone for direction and at first, it kept dimming a few time, while in GPS mode. Then it Completely Shut Down! While I was Still Driving! As it did so, it displayed a warning that it was too hot. It was mounted on the dashboard with my cool new travel gadget, iOttie Dashboard Car Mount Holder. And on such a nice sunny day, the sun overwhelmed my smartphone. Neither I nor my wife knew that this could happen. Live and Learn. And then bring your regular GPS with you.
It was good that we learned this on the short trip and I knew my way back at the point that the smartphone shut off. Going forward, especially on longer trips and traveling during warmer summer months, we will take our Garmin Nüvi along. It might not be as smart as the phone, but it does what it is designed to do great and in most conditions. I would probably still use the iPhone as the primary for shorter trips and initially, but will be navigating with Nuvi on several-days journeys.

Did You Know?:
Small planes, such as the Cherokee Piper, have foot pedals that are used to direct the plane left and right while on the ground

Two Year Wedding Anniversary - we were traveling

This week was our two year wedding anniversary. We took a short trip down the coast to Cape May and Atlantic City. We had some great times at both.

While in Cape May we caught a sunset on the beach. Saw the Cape from birds eye view.

On the trip with us we decided to take along the new camera, Panasonic Lumix.Even though we weren't going to go swimming, it is the smallest camera we have and we have been impressed with the quality of photos it takes. It fit easily in the jeans pocket and the handbag. Easy to operate and had many modes. This camera has sunset mode, panorama mode, and even food mode. That is right, there is a mode for taking pictures of food.

We also had one of the best breakfast we ever had while traveling. It was at Mad Batters. We looked through several restaurants and their reviews for breakfast to get us ready for the drive to AC. While overall reviews were ok, there were some that mentioned the service and some other negatives. We did not experienced those while there. It was great fresh food and great service. The coffee was a bit watered down.

That same day not only did we have a great start, we also had a great finish. Second half of the day we were in Atlantic City. We had a celebratory dinner at Morton's Steakhouse. Contrary to some review we also had great service. Everyone was welcoming and congratulating us on our anniversary. Though we did not receive any comp ;)
We also went strolling down the boardwalk to check out the newest addition to the casino row, Revel. It is an impressive structure, with various turns and zags, and rounded edges. We did notice that unlike most other casinos, this one did not have its name up on top. Instead it was at the bottom next to entrance (see picture below). Inside, it is very spacious. The rooms are huge and there are lounge areas spread out through out with small amount furniture in the middle and lots of open space.

iPhone came in very handy when deciding where to dine as we were able to locate the places, find out reviews, opening times, as well as menus. The phone also came in handy in navigating. While we used the good old Garmin GPS, at times it needed to be supplemented. It was a lot easier to find and map a place then entering all that data into the GPS. Also the apps make it easier to access addresses and directions.

One other thing worth mentioning that I enjoyed on this trip were the EZ-Pass express lanes. I have not experienced these before. The fastest one I went through before was 25 mph type. The toll gates on the Garden State Expressway divide cars with the pass and those paying cash into separate sections. I have had my pass for quite awhile. To me its the only way to travel, I don't understand why you would not. I was able to go through the multiple tolls without slowing down.

Two sides to every gadget

During the Labor Day weekend, I and my wife took another one of our fun short road trips. This time we went to Upstate NY up to Warwick.
In my previous post I wrote about how GPS can Tell you how to get to places, though on this trip I realized another dimension to having this gadget on a trip. Here is what happened:
On our one-day trip we visited several wineries for some wine tasting, went to get ice cream at Bellvale Farms Creamery (which I highly recommend if you are in those parts as ice cream was really good and so was the view ..see pics in photo album), and went to a drive-in movie, they do still exist. After the movie, we were going to stay over in northern NJ as it was late and we have been driving for awhile. We plugged in the address into GPS and off we went. However, about 5 minutes into the trip, were were interrupted by the road closure on main highway we needed to take. It was flooded and/or had construction after the storm. We thought, "thats ok, we will just point the GPS to build a detour." And after some recalculation, it did. So, as we got so used to doing, we followed its directions. It turned out that it was taking us another way but to the same highway that was closed. We turned off the road again going in opposite direction, again hopping that the unit will find a detour. Once again it was leading us to the same highway, now from a different direction. To add a kicker to the situation we were also running low on gas. So we circled around the neighborhood for a bit, looking for a way out, as though we were in a labyrinth of some kind. Then we decided to take a pause and regroup as we realized that as smart as GPS seems sometimes, it was not going to help us out.
After starring at it the GPS for awhile, I started moving the interactive map on it. And that is when it dawned on me. We can use the map within the unit in less advanced way and find the side streets manually that would take us to our final destination. With my navigator, ie my wife, following the route we came up with, we made it out of the labyrinth and to the gas station, and at last, to the house.

Why good to have on a trip:
- Great for navigating to new destination
- Turn by turn direction
- Can be used as a map
- might lead you out of labyrinth
