When airplane mode is enabled, you’ll often see an airplane icon in your device’s notification bar.
Enabling airplane mode disables Wi-Fi on your phone. However, on most devices, you can enable Wi-Fi after enabling airplane mode.
Turn off cellular data usage
By turning on airplane mode, all of the cellular signals will be blocked. But Wi-Fi will be working so you can connect to that in-flight Wi-Fi network. Some devices also allow you to enable Bluetooth when airplane mode is enabled.
Play games or watch movies
You can still play games on your phone in airplane mode. Better yet, some of the advertising might not come through since you are not connected to the Internet. And even better, you won't be able to make any in-game purchases that rack up really quickly for the most addicting games

You can still use devices on the aircraft — even during takeoff and landing — as long as airplane mode is enabled
Save battery
Radios on a device use a large amount of power, communicating with cell towers. Some of the things background apps can do are check your location via GPS, scan for Wi-Fi signals, download updates and other such activities that drain your phone's battery. With airplane mode on all the radio signals will be disabled. It is especially useful on a tablet when you are just using your tablet as an offline eReader.
Charging your phone at an airport before take off? Airplane mode means your smartphone is barely doing anything. Cellular connectivity, Wi-Fi (unless you turned it on), Bluetooth, GPS and location services are all switched off. This means that while you're charging up your mobile device then that battery indicator will go up at a faster rate.
Turning it on
To activate Airplane Mode on your iPhone, simply go into the Settings and the first item should be Airplane Mode. Tap on the switch to turn it on
To unplug for awhile
Disconnect from the outside world in airplane mode. With the demand of constantly being connected, it's easy to get in the habit of checking your e-mail every time you hear a beep. With all the connections turned off, you get a few minutes of quite.
Avoid international roaming fees
International roaming charges aren't cheap. To avoid these throughout your trip, turn on the Airplane mode and only use Wi-Fi hot spots while you travel.
If you turn airplane mode off, even for just a few minutes (to make a quick call, for example), you could end up with high data roaming charges as your phone tries to download any emails you might have received or any other data.
