Don't Text and Drive

Don't Text and Drive

» The National Safety Council reports that using your phone while driving leads to 1.6 million crashes each year.
» Nearly 390,000 injuries occur each year from accidents caused by texting while driving.
» 1 out of every 4 car accidents in the United States is caused by texting and driving.
» Texting while driving is 6 times more likely to cause an accident than driving drunk.
» Answering a text takes away your attention for about five seconds. Traveling at 55 mph, that's enough time to travel the length of a football field, and doing it with your eyes closed

Distracted driving is dangerous, claiming 2,841 lives a year

What is distracted driving? According to NHTSA, distracted driving is any activity that diverts attention from driving, including talking or texting on your phone, eating and drinking, talking to people in your vehicle, fiddling with the stereo, entertainment or navigation system — anything that takes your attention away from the task of safe driving.

In the near future as the electric and autonomous cars develop...

Until then

Mapping Travel: Smartphone Alternative

Taking smartphone on long or oversea trips...
I will be honest, I am still quite apprehensive about taking my phone everywhere I go. It's a pricey gadget. Moreover, besides helpful navigation it has a lot of other stuff stored on it. I would not want to be separated from it. Ever. (Keep Your Gadgets Safe While Traveling)
So while it is a bit more old school, I still prefer to grab a paper map of the location we are in once we arrived there. It usually has good details as well as marking of major squares and centers and local restaurants and even coupons.

Here is a series of shots, and what has become a tradition, of me reading the map and leading us on our next adventure:

It’s winter time in Brazil. Even though it's Brazil's cool season, temperatures are hovering close to 80 degrees Fahrenheit (26 degrees Celsius) this week and humidity is near 70 percent. And, when it's warm, the air conditioning tends to fail. The month of June is characterized by essentially constant daily high temperatures, with daily highs around 72°F throughout the month, exceeding 80°F or dropping below 64°F only one day in ten.
